A look at ObliterationMC's Development

..To the average viewer, ObliterationMC may look "simple" or "easy to recreate", but in reality, it has been a NIGHTMARE perfecting the server. There is a LOT going on in the background that most people barely get to see. But today, for the first time ever, we're going to let everyone take a look at.... "The Development of ObliterationMC"!

January 13th, 2014

-- The Digital Ocean servers had just authenticated the OMC machine --

The machine had booted for the first time. I downloaded a few dependencies for Minecraft, including Java. I downloaded Craftbukkit 1.8 and started the server...

March 1st, 2014

This date is approximate, but around this time, The server had gained a decent amount of players, and I came up with a name for it, Obliteration Factions. Yep, OMC used to be a Factions server!

May 15th, 2014

I had just decided that Obliteration Factions was too long of a name, and I changed it to ObliterationMC! This was ALSO the exact date of my domain registration, where players could then connect with ObliterationMC.net (I actually sort of miss that domain ❤)

July 28th, 2014

On July 28th, 2014, we had a server breach from an unknown identity, supposedly located in the UK. Everything was destroyed.. Not just the spawn, entire worlds were deleted.

October 30th, 2014

After almost 4 months, we finally had recovered from the destruction, along with new players, just in time for our first Halloween. I had hired a few staff, including XxDarkBoi, a long time member who had just recently retired from Minecraft, and JaketheCake, one of ObliterationMC's most dedicated players.

December 21st 2014 - March 2015

During this time period, I took a LONG break from Minecraft and server hosting, focusing on my education and just life in general. ObliterationMC was a wasteland around this time, with only 1 or 2 players per WEEK! Yikes...

April 1st, 2015

I realized this day that ObliterationMC was a PART of my life. It wasn't just a quick cash-grab, it was dedication. I came back that day feeling enthusiastic, and ready to fix my server, along with 1.8.4, which was a security update that I wish was there during the server breach.

May 15th, 2015

This was a tough period. ObliterationMC's domain had just expired, puzzling tons of dedicated players who couldn't connect to the server. I was getting desperate, starting campaigns to raise money and my first server store, which I realized was a failure because of it's base design. Nobody WANTS to spend money, you need to give them something they actually WANT! That was the difficulty. No one wants to spend $100+ on a Minecraft server, especially one who clearly can't be trusted, with the server breach and domain expiration. Everyone wants to know what happens next.

August 8th, 2015

I was furious. Here, I, who just wanted to host a Minecraft server, had everything bad happen. I thought I was at the bottom, until 2 hackers proved me wrong. I was over. I was sick of hours of dedication not show-able. I was resisting ending it, and that was when I realized, I needed another break.

November 1st, 2015

With the start of a new month, I was again enthusiastic about ObliterationMC. Things were starting to go alright, I was enjoying myself, and so were my players and staff. ...But that wasn't for long.. Because....

December 25th, 2015 CHRISTMAS

I know what all of you are thinking- How can something as good as Christmas be so bad? Well, unfortunately, Christmas Day 2015, my great grandpa "Jim" had passed, leaving me depressed. I was over. Not just Minecraft, but everything. My school grades plummeted, and I physically couldn't stop myself from breaking into tears almost everyday, until..

May 1st, 2016

Yeah, that was a long time left depressed. Fortunately, a couple months leading up to May I was feeling better, it just wasn't until May 1st that I finally got back to Minecraft. I also got some cash for getting my grades back up, and registered a new domain, "playOMC.net". I was officially back.

June 15th, 2016

School had just got out, and I was able to dedicate HOURS on ObliterationMC. I also joined Discord, and created my first Discord server, ObliterationMC!

August 27th, 2016

ObliterationMC's Discord server and Minecraft server had grown tremendously during this time. Sadly, by physics, all things stable eventually become unstable, and all good things must come to an end. This includes the success of ObliterationMC, and Summer vacation, which marked the end of my daily dedication.

October 12th, 2016

ObliterationMC's discord was raided by a fellow staff member. Everything was gone.. All channels were deleted, and everything was in mayhem. I ditched the discord and made a new one, the current one.

November 24th, 2016

..It was Thanksgiving! Just in time for ObliterationMC's first-ever Turkey Games! This included a custom castle, which included several minigames users could play! Man, it was a blast!

// I've realised we're running out of space, so we're skipping a couple chapters, sorry! //

January 30th, 2017

It was my birthday, in which I was gifted a laptop! Finally, I had a decent computer to manage the server from. During this time, the most progress was done on the gameplay of ObliterationMC. We had a cool spawn, which I build myself, a HUGE PvP arena, and more! This lasted all the way until...

June 18th, 2017

A computer malfunction on Digital Ocean's end completely corrupted ObliterationMC, yet again leaving us with nothing. Except... Many kind-hearted players and staff, who helped us start again, this time completely changing the gameplay.

January 2nd, 2018

ObliterationMC's big update was out, along with a new server base, Paperclip 1.12.2! Boy how did I regret that..

March ?, 2018

ObliterationMC had just around this time finished development on all 4 of its gamemodes- Factions, Skyblocks, Prison, and Creative! Everything was going great! We had fully recovered, and made significant progress to our server's mechanics!

May 29th, 2018

I payed my domain bill, and everything was normal. Until... We had experienced, yes, I'm not joking, ANOTHER server corruption! This was one of the toughest times we had ever gone through. So much work had went into designing the server, and I was stupid enough to forget to make BACKUPS! :'(

August 1st, 2018

Around this time, I had yet again, fully recovered the server, with a "few" changes...
I became friends with hbms432, who saved everything... His knowledge in programming and server development change ObliterationMC's history forever! I relied on him for most of my new features' background mechanics. and changed ObliterationMC's gamemode to "Modified Survival", which is its current state!

Present Day

ObliterationMC has had a HUGE, DEPRESSING, and ENCOURAGING history... None of this would've been here without the server's long history, from server corruptions to data breaches! But most importantly, none of ObliterationMC would've been here without EVERYONE! You, all of our dedicated staff, and even the 2 hackers who left me at the bottom.

I thank all of you for the encouragement and support in the development of ObliterationMC, and look forward to a long, rich future, full of new players! I also look forward to another server corruption, lol!

Thank you, - brayjamin
